High ropes course activities on a cruise ship.

Continuous Belay Systems

Continuous Belay Systems and Track Belay Systems eliminate the need for any transfer besides the first one to start the course and the second one to exit the course.  Once connected, the participants lanyard is connected to a shuttle or trolley that is in a steel track or riding on a cable system.

The continuous nature of these systems prevents the possibility that the participant will become disconnected form the fall arrest system while on the ropes course.  As participants move from element to element, the shuttle or pulley must move over or though some form of a bracket attached to the support structure (pole, tree or column).

This option is usually best for commercial use.  If you’re trying to get a large amount of people though during the time of operation, this would be your best option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@experientialsystems.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A Continuous Belay System (or Track Belay) is a highly engineered fall-protection system designed for ropes courses and aerial parks. Instead of participants manually unclipping and re-clipping carabiners as they navigate the course, their harness is connected to a specialized shuttle or trolley. This trolley glides continuously along a seamless steel track or specialized wire rope system from the very beginning of the course to the very end.

The genius of a Continuous Belay System lies in its structural hardware. As participants move from one bridge or obstacle to the next, the life-safety cable is mounted to trees or utility poles using highly specialized, customized pass-through brackets. The shuttle or pulley is geometrically designed with a specific slit or housing that allows it to glide smoothly directly over or through these brackets without the participant ever needing to detach from the line. .

Yes! Many top-tier Continuous Belay Systems utilize advanced rolling trolleys that function as both a standard safety shuttle and a high-speed zip line pulley. This allows participants to complete a suspended rope bridge, step up to a platform, and immediately jump onto a zip line, seamlessly flying to the next obstacle without any hardware changes.

While both systems offer incredible safety, they operate differently:

  • Continuous Belay (CBS): Participants never touch their hardware. They are locked onto a single, linear track. This is ideal for maximizing speed and throughput.
  • Smart Belay: Participants manage their own specialized, interlocking carabiners. This allows climbers to choose different routes at junctions and safely pass slower climbers at platforms, offering more autonomy but requiring slightly more instruction.

In a traditional ropes course, human error is the greatest risk; a distracted participant can accidentally unclip both of their carabiners at a transfer platform. A Continuous Belay System eliminates this risk entirely. The system dictates that the participant’s lanyard is locked into the shuttle by a trained guide at the ground level (the entry point), and it physically cannot be removed from the track until the participant reaches the designated exit point on the ground.

Yes. Traditional static belay courses require high staff-to-participant ratios to actively monitor every single guest's transfer to ensure they don't accidentally unclip. Because a CBS mechanically prevents participants from disconnecting, your guides transition from active belayers to course monitors. This drastically reduces the number of staff members required to safely operate the park, yielding a massive long-term Return on Investment (ROI).

In most cases, yes. ESI frequently works with facilities looking to upgrade their aging, traditional static belay courses into modern, high-throughput CBS parks. While it typically requires swapping out the existing safety cables for specialized CBS wire rope and installing new pass-through brackets on your existing trees or poles, our engineering team can design a retrofit that maximizes your current infrastructure.

A Continuous Belay System relies on flawless geometry. If a pass-through bracket is mounted at the wrong angle, or if the cable tension is slightly off, the trolleys will jam, frustrating participants and wearing out expensive hardware. Experiential Systems, Inc. is the only ISO 9001:2015 Certified builder in North America. Our quality management system ensures that every bracket, cable, and structural attachment is precision-engineered, strictly documented, and installed in full compliance with ACCT, PRCA, and ASTM standards.
