Ropes Course Gear - Smart Belay Systems

Smart Belays are more expensive than traditional static belay lanyards as they utilize a form of technology that only allows one gate on one lanyard to be opened at a time.  This minimizes the potential for a “total unclip” on the ropes course while still allowing the participant to choose their rate of travel on the challenge course elements and when to move from one element to the next.

Check out the videos below to learn more about two products we like - the Edelrid Smart Belay and the ISC Smart Snap Belay. Both smart belay systems are available through our online ropes course gear store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@experientialsystems.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A Smart Belay is an advanced, mechanical fall-protection lanyard used on ropes courses and aerial adventure parks. Unlike traditional lanyards, a Smart Belay utilizes interconnected technology that dictates how the carabiners function. The internal mechanism guarantees that if one carabiner is open and disconnected from the safety cable, the second carabiner physically locks shut. This ensures the participant is always connected to the life-safety system by at least one point of contact.

On a traditional static belay course (using standard "lobster claw" lanyards), participants must manually unclip and re-clip their carabiners when transferring between elements. This introduces human error, creating a severe risk that a panicked or distracted participant might unclip both carabiners at the same time—resulting in a "total unclip" and zero fall protection. Smart Belays completely engineer out this human error by making it mechanically impossible to open the second gate until the first one is securely locked onto a new cable.

The Edelrid Smart Belay X is one of the premier systems in the industry. It utilizes a highly intuitive magnetic and  mechanical interlocking system driven by integrated pulleys. When the participant squeezes the mechanism to open one carabiner, first the lanyard looks for the steel belay cable using an integrated magnet in the nose. Once the steel is identifiedcable inside the lanyard instantly triggers the locking pin on the other carabiner. As an added bonus, the Edelrid carabiners feature built-in steel pulleys, allowing participants to transition directly onto zip lines without needing a separate zip line trolley.

The ISC Smart Snap is another highly respected, robust option for challenge courses. It functions by requiring the participant to use a specialized "key" or "ring" installed on the course's transfer points. The carabiner will only unlock when engaged with this specific ring, ensuring the participant is transferring their weight to an approved, load-bearing anchor point and never mistakenly clipping onto a non-structural wire or rope.

This is a critical operational distinction. A Continuous Belay System (CBS) connects the participant to a shuttle that rolls along a single, unbroken track; the participant cannot disconnect themselves until they reach the end of the course. While CBS is incredibly safe, it forces participants into a single-file line. A Smart Belay offers the same level of safety but preserves the participant's autonomy. Climbers can choose their own rate of travel, select different routes, and safely pass slower climbers at transfer platforms.

While traditional lanyards are cheaper, they require intense staff supervision. Facilities using traditional lanyards must maintain a very high staff-to-participant ratio to actively monitor every single transfer a guest makes. Upgrading to a Smart Belay system drastically reduces your staffing requirements, lowers your operational liability, and often results in favorable premium reductions from your commercial insurance provider.

Yes. Because they contain complex internal mechanics, synchronized cables, and precision-engineered gates, the initial capital investment for a Smart Belay is significantly higher than a standard piece of webbing with two basic carabiners. However, the Return on Investment (ROI) is rapidly realized through reduced seasonal labor costs, higher participant throughput, and unmatched risk mitigation.

In most cases, yes! One of the massive advantages of Smart Belays over Continuous Belay Systems (CBS) is that they generally do not require you to completely rebuild your course. Because Smart Belays interact directly with standard 3/8" or 1/2" steel wire rope, Experiential Systems, Inc. (ESI) can often help you integrate these advanced lanyards into your existing infrastructure with only minor modifications to your transfer platforms.

Because Smart Belays contain moving mechanical parts, springs, and internal cables, they require strict maintenance protocols. Your staff must perform daily visual and tactile inspections to ensure the interlocking mechanism is firing correctly and not jammed with dirt or pine sap. Furthermore, like all life-safety gear, Smart Belays must be annually inspected and periodically recertified or serviced by a qualified professional in accordance with the manufacturer’s exact guidelines.

You can purchase the industry's leading systems—including the Edelrid Smart Belay and the ISC Smart Snap—directly through ESI’s online equipment store (ropes.courses). When you buy from ESI, you aren't just buying hardware from a generic catalog; you are purchasing from an ISO 9001:2015 Certified builder. Our experts can consult with your team to ensure the specific Smart Belay you choose is perfectly compatible with your facility's cable diameters and operational goals.
