TruBlue auto belay system for climbing walls and climbing towers.

AUTO BELAYS

TRUBLUE AUTO BELAY SYSTEM

TruBlue auto belay systems can make a nice addition to almost any climbing structure.  This auto belay system provides many of the same benefits listed on our smart belay and continuous belay pages.  This system not only removes human error from the belay process but also can allow your staff to focus on more than just the one climber.  Here is a quick video of Nat, an ESI construction worker, demonstrating the TruBlue in action.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@experientialsystems.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

An auto belay is a highly engineered mechanical device mounted at the top of a climbing wall, Tango Tower, or challenge course exit point. As a climber ascends, the device automatically retracts the webbing lanyard to take up the slack. If the climber falls or reaches the top and lets go, the device instantly catches them and controls their descent smoothly to the ground, entirely replacing the need for a human belayer.

TheTRUBLUE Auto Belay utilizes proprietary eddy-current magnetic braking technology. Unlike older friction-based brakes (which use brake pads that wear down and require heavy maintenance), magnetic braking is frictionless and self-regulating. The magnetic field automatically adjusts to the exact weight of the participant, guaranteeing the same smooth, predictable descent for a 50-pound child as it does for a 300-pound adult.

Absolutely. While they are a staple in indoor climbing gyms, TRUBLUE Auto Belays are engineered for extreme durability and are fully rated for outdoor environments. Experiential Systems, Inc. (ESI) routinely installs them on outdoor Tango Towers, summer camp climbing walls, and high ropes course descent stations.

In a traditional climbing setup, you need one staff member (or a trained peer) to actively belay a single climber, creating massive bottlenecks at the base of the wall. Auto belays allow multiple climbers to ascend simultaneously while a single staff member supervises the entire zone. This drastically increases the number of participants you can process per hour, maximizing your facility's operational efficiency.

Yes. The Return on Investment (ROI) of purchasing an auto belay is typically realized within the first operating season simply through reduced seasonal labor costs. By eliminating the strict 1:1 staff-to-climber ratio, your facility can safely operate towering climbing structures with a fraction of the payroll.

The leading cause of climbing accidents is human error—specifically, distracted, fatigued, or inexperienced human belayers. Auto belays engineer out this human error entirely. The mechanical device never loses focus, never gets tired, and never accidentally lets go of the brake rope, ensuring a flawless, consistent catch every single time.

Yes. Mounting an auto belay is not a DIY project; it requires a structural anchor point rated for high-impact dynamic loads. ESI’s engineering and construction teams can evaluate your current climbing wall or ropes course, design the appropriate rigging, and professionally install the auto belay in strict compliance with manufacturer specifications and ACCT or CWA (Climbing Wall Association) standards.

Because auto belays are life-safety fall-protection devices, the integrity of the structural anchor point is paramount. As the only ISO 9001:2015 Certified challenge course vendor in North America, ESI’s installation process includes rigorous, audited document control. This provides your facility with legally defensible proof that your auto belay was mounted to the absolute highest global engineering standards.

While the internal mechanics of a TRUBLUE are sealed, your facility staff must perform a documented daily visual and tactile inspection before use. This primarily involves pulling the webbing lanyard all the way out to check for cuts, severe fraying, or chemical degradation, testing the retraction tension, and ensuring the locking carabiner functions smoothly. ESI provides the site-specific training necessary to ensure your staff knows how to execute these checks.

Yes. This is a mandatory requirement. To maintain CE/ANSI safety certifications and keep the manufacturer's warranty valid, devices like the TRUBLUE must undergo annual recertification. The device must be unmounted and shipped to an authorized service center where certified technicians open the unit, inspect the magnetic rotor, replace internal wear parts (like the retraction spring), and digitally recertify the unit for another year of use.
